Devbar is a menu-bar app, so it has no Dock icon or main window. After you open it, look for the gauge icon near the clock.

## Requirements

- A Mac with Apple Silicon
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later
- For AI quota, a login for the tools you use: the Codex CLI, Claude Code, or Muse. Devbar reuses those logins and never asks for a password of its own.

## Download

1. **Get the latest release**

    Download the `.dmg` from the [latest release](https://github.com/praveenjuge/devbar/releases/latest) on GitHub. Each release also has a `.zip` and a `.pkg` installer if you prefer those.

2. **Move it to Applications**

    Open the disk image and drag **Devbar** into **Applications**.

3. **Open it**

    Open Devbar from Applications or Spotlight. The app is signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens without a warning.

## First run

Click the gauge icon in the menu bar to open the menu. Devbar refreshes your quota right away and then every 10 minutes.

The first time Devbar reads your Claude Code or Muse login, macOS asks whether it can use that item in your Keychain. Choose **Always Allow** so you aren't asked again. Devbar reads Keychain items through the system's `security` tool, so one approval keeps working after updates.

To start Devbar when you log in, turn on **Launch at login** in [Settings](/settings).

:::note
Camera access needs Full Disk Access, because macOS keeps camera permissions in a protected database. Devbar only asks when you open the Camera menu. See [Camera](/features/camera).

## Build from source

Devbar is a Swift package. To build and run a debug copy:

```bash
git clone https://github.com/praveenjuge/devbar.git
cd devbar
swift build
.build/debug/Devbar
```

A few flags print data as JSON and quit, which helps when something looks off:

```bash
.build/debug/Devbar --dump-usage      # AI quota from each provider
.build/debug/Devbar --dump-ports      # detected dev servers
.build/debug/Devbar --dump-worktrees  # git worktrees in your home folder
.build/debug/Devbar --dump-camera     # camera permissions (needs Full Disk Access)
```
